Postdoctoral | Research Scientist (W-0026)


We are now opening a 2-year position for

Postdoctoral | Research Scientist (W-0026 | all genders)

The successful applicant will join a team of scientists studying climate change through the development and application of a next generation of km-scale Earth-system models.   The successful candidate will work on the topic of marine boundary layer clouds, to understand what controls their variability and structure in the present climate, and their changes as Earth’s climate is perturbed.  Their research will be embedded within a number of national (German) and international (EU) projects, including WarmWorld, NextGEMS, and DestinE, thereby creating a rich and collaborative intellectual environment. It will also contribute to the design of a planned (2028) stratocumulus field campaign.


  • PhD degree in meteorology, oceanography, physics, mathematics, engineering, or other related fields
  • In-depth knowledge of, and an interest in, the physics of marine boundary layer clouds, and in linking their representation in models to observations
  • Excellent programming skills in Python (or related languages); experience working with data intensive applications is a plus
  • Track record of excellent research as documented by scientific publications, presentations and personal references
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to work autonomously

  • The position is offered for 2 years starting at or before 1 January 2025
  • Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions depending on qualification (E14 TVöD), including extensive social security plans
