Postdoctoral position in Ocean Modelling (W-0043)

THE POSITION

The Complex Modelling & Extreme Computing Group at MPI-M invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position (W-0043 | all genders)

The successful candidate will contribute to the further development of the ICON-O ocean general circulation model. This position is broadly defined and open to a range of research topics. Areas of particular interest include: Advancing ocean parameterizations; Conducting and analyzing high-resolution simulations to improve our understanding of ocean turbulence; Exploring machine learning techniques to analyse ocean dynamics; Enhancing numerical algorithms for GPU architectures. The specific focus of the position will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and expertise.

YOUR PROFILE

  • PhD degree in oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics, or other related fields
  • In-depth knowledge of numerical ocean modelling and computational climate science
  • Experience in supercomputer simulations of state-of-the-art circulation models
  • Proficiency in Fortran, UNIX/Linux, Python, parallel programming, visualization, and evaluation of simulation data
  • Demonstrated experience in executing research projects and publishing results

EMPLOYEEMENT CONDITIONS

  • Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and ability to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined for this project. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions depending on qualification (E14 TVöD), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. The positions are in principle full time. However, part-time applications can be considered
  • The position is offered for 2 years. Extension of the contract is subject to availability of funding for the second project phase
  • Starting date of the position is August 2025
